The short version: History Co-Author is the most complete system I’ve seen for writing narrative history with AI. It plans the book, researches the record, writes it chapter by chapter and teaches you how to publish it. It leaves you one job: finding the primary sources your book stands on. That’s the job my bonus does for you.

What is History Co-Author?

History Co-Author is a system for researching, writing and publishing narrative history books with Claude or ChatGPT. You answer eighteen questions, and the AI works with you as a researcher and a writer. It builds the plan for your book, researches the historical record, then writes the book chapter by chapter, with the notes and bibliography built at the end.

It comes from the creator of Cozy Co-Author and Steamy Co-Author, and this time the genre is narrative history: true stories from the past, told like a novel but held to the record.

The creator used it on his own three-book series, Forgotten Wars of American Expansion: The Army That Vanished, Red Sticks Rising and War in the Swamps. By his own published figures, the series took under fourteen days, and Book 1 went to #1 on Amazon’s History free list. Those are his results, not a promise of yours, but they show what the system was built to do.

What’s inside

The system (three files):

  • Narrative History Framework. The genre’s architecture: the record rules that keep every quotation exact, and nine narrator voices to choose from.
  • Style Pack. Bans and self-checks that keep AI tells and “Wikipedia prose” off your pages.
  • The Setup Prompt. An 18-step planning conversation with three research passes. It builds your Book Bible and your Research Bible before a word of the book is written.

Also included:

  • Two plugins. Narrative History Studio for Claude Cowork and for ChatGPT Work, so you don’t copy files or paste prompts by hand.
  • A 29-module course. From the first idea to a published series: covers, Kindle Create, KDP, promotion and Book 2.
  • Tutorials and videos. Click-through screenshot tutorials, video walkthroughs and action steps in every module.

What I like

1. It takes the record seriously. Most AI book systems care about word count. This one is built around accuracy: exact quotations, real sources, notes and a bibliography. For history readers, that’s what earns trust and sells Book 2.

2. It doesn’t sound like AI. The Style Pack exists to keep the flat, list-like “AI voice” out of the book, and the nine narrator voices give you a real choice of tone.

3. It plans before it writes. The 18-step Setup with three research passes means the book has a spine before chapter one. That’s where most AI-written books fall apart.

4. It covers publishing, not just writing. The course goes all the way through covers, Kindle Create, KDP and promotion, then on to Book 2. You aren’t left with a manuscript and no idea what to do with it.

5. It’s built for series. History readers read in series, and the whole system, from the Book Bible to the Book 2 module, is set up for it.

What to know before you buy

No review is honest without these:

  • You need your own Claude or ChatGPT account. History Co-Author works with them; it doesn’t replace them.
  • It’s a system, not a shortcut to sales. The creator’s results are his own. Yours depend on your subject, your work and the market.
  • It hands one step back to you. The course asks you to find the primary sources your book stands on (the letters, diaries and official reports), download them, and give them to Setup before it researches. The course is honest about why this matters. In Module 10 it warns: “An AI can name a source that does not exist, or a letter nobody wrote, and sound completely sure of it.”

That last point is the only real gap I found, and it’s where most beginners will stall. Which archive? Which file? Is it even real?

So I built the fix.

My bonus: History Source Finder

History Source Finder is web software I built for History Co-Author buyers. You can’t buy it anywhere. You only get it when you buy History Co-Author through my link.

I bought History Co-Author myself. Working through it, I saw that finding sources is the step that decides whether your book reads like real history, and the step the course leaves to you. History Source Finder does it for you.

Type your subject in plain words, for example “Harmar’s 1790 campaign against the Miami towns”. It searches the Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg and Wikisource at once, and shows you only sources that really exist.

What it does:

  • Real sources, never invented. Every result comes straight from a public archive, with a link to the original. The AI plans the search; it never makes up a source.
  • Written at the time, first. Letters, journals, reports and testimony from the people who were there come first, even when they were printed decades later.
  • “Clean text” check. It tests every source for typed text, so Setup can quote it exactly. Scans the machine read badly are flagged.
  • Mentions count. It shows how often your people are actually named inside a source, so you know a book covers your story and not just its title.
  • One click to Research Sources. Download a ready folder, a highlights file of the key passages, and a copy-ready note to paste into Setup.
  • Your searches, saved. Reopen any past search for free.

A real search: for Harmar’s 1790 campaign, it found the official 1791 court of enquiry into General Harmar’s own conduct, with clean text and Harmar named 75 times inside.

Your first 10 searches are on me. After that, you add your own OpenAI key, which costs a few cents a search.

Why it matters

History Co-Author researches well on its own. But when you give Setup real first-hand sources, the research gets faster, uses less of your AI plan, and the quotations come out exact. History Source Finder turns that step from a research project into a few minutes.

Score
Accuracy and research 9.5
Writing quality and voice 9.5
Ease of use 9.0
Publishing training 9.5
Value at $17 9.5
Overall 9.4

History Co-Author is a serious, well-built system for a genre with a loyal, series-reading audience. It plans, researches, writes and teaches you to publish, and it holds the AI to the record instead of letting it improvise.

It isn’t perfect: you need your own AI account, and it leaves source-hunting to you. The second gap is the one my bonus closes. With History Source Finder, you get the whole job done: real sources in, a published history series out.

If you’ve wanted to write history but didn’t know how to make AI get the facts right, this is the system I’d start with. Just make sure you get it through my link, so you get the bonus too.
